Abstract: In article basic provisions of article L.N. Tolstoy «About national education» are considered. The article published on pages of the journal «Otechestvennye zapiski» in 1874. It analyzes the journal context of the democratic edition, in particular, publicistic articles Voronov, Bervi-Flerovsky, Mordovtsev, Demert, Mikhaylovsky in whom the pedagogical questions, issues of national education are touched
